The indiscriminate use of antibiotics may promote the development of resistant bacteria. The Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality held an Open House on the proper use of antibiotics to coincide with the European Day for the Prudent Use of these drugs. About 25,000 patients die each year in the European Union due to an infection caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. The secretary general for health and consumers and president of Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products, Pilar Farjas, inaugurated this conference which has aimed to present the main strategies and actions that are contemplated in Plan National Strategic and Action to reduce the risk of selection and spread of antimicrobial resistance, as well as presenting the main activities in this field are being carried out by the Government. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, ECDC and the European Medicines Agency, EMA, around 25,000 patients die each year in the European Union due to an infection caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, with added costs of approximately 1,500 million euros for extra hospital care, medical care and lost productivity. Inappropriate and indiscriminate use of antibiotics is one of the main factors contributing to this phenomenon. The Council of the European Union, the European Parliament, the European Commission, its Agencies (EMA, ECDC, EFSA) and the network of agencies have identified the need to establish a common strategy Europe to assess and address this problem of development of antimicrobial resistance. In the European Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance includes 12 stocks that are identified as key in the fight against the resistance in the Member States and should be developed for each of these. Critical care physicians are finding that antibiotics are losing effectiveness in UCIS. Some bacteria have mutated to ‘immunize’ against the drugs. The cause could be due to excessive of antibiotics. The Spanish Society of Intensive Care Medicine and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC) says that what is happening is that some bacteria are developing genetic mutations that ‘immunized’ more or less measured against drugs, which is complicating the healing of infections. According to Dr. Mercedes Nieto SEMICYUC member, is a health problem worldwide, with serious consequences for patients, because ‘we were almost out of treatment options or the need for multiple antibiotics simultaneously, so that the problem continues to rise’.
