A study of nearly 400 male elite athletes shows that the condition of high competition sports reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in adulthood by 28%, concludes research published in 'Diabetologia' by Dr. Merja Laine, University of Helsinki, Finland, and colleagues. The study of Finnish male athletes follows up the work that began in 1985, when it sent a questionnaire to 1,518 ex-athletes and 1,010 controls, and others in 1995 and 2001.
